Sock Drive Aims to Make Local Impact

Help us Sock-it-to-Poverty!

warming hearts and feet for the holidays

Everyone in our area can help the United Way of Northeast Michigan “Sock It To Poverty” from now until December 12 by setting up a donation site at your workplace to collect new socks, mittens, hats, or cash for people in need in our community.

Basic socks are the No. 1 requested item at homeless shelters. They are the most needed, but least donated article of clothing and nothing feels as good as a new pair, especially when you are used to wearing damaged, dirty or not socks at all.

“People served by our local agencies typically have greater needs, such as shelter, food, outerwear and counseling, so something as simple as a pair of socks often gets overlooked,” said United Way executive director, Sonya Thomas.  “We are committed to bringing a little joy to help people in need,” Thomas added.

To participate or make a donation, make a contribution through this web site. Select your gift amount and then (look for the Sock it to Poverty tab).  You can also contact the United Way and we will email you a donate poster and collection tally sheet for your collection site.

Once you have collected your donations, just drop your socks or other items off at the United Way Office before December 14 or call and we will pick them up.

Socks can be purchased for all ages and genders from infants through adults.
