United Way Campaign…Off To A Good Start

“It takes a team to make the United Way successful” as the theme for the sports oriented United Way campaign kickoff that was held on Friday, September 8th, at the APlex. Over the last several years, the United Way and the Alpena Chamber of Commerce have partnered and hold the kickoff during the Chamber’s “Good Morning Alpena” breakfast. This year’s event was hosted by Dylan Wallace of The Wallace Firm, and Dave Szydlowski with NEMROC, who are both United Way Board members…better known as the D&D Show. During the show, information was shared by Jackie Krawczak, Alpena Chamber of Commerce Director, who highlighted the upcoming Chamber sponsored events. Carlene Przykucki with Partners in Prevention, Amy Cedervall with Salvation Army, Wendy Servia with Alpena Senior Citizens Center and Stacy Malenfant with Hospice of Michigan, all United Way Community Supported agencies, who gave information on their programs that are supported by United Way. Germaine Stoppa, General Manager of the United Way Team and Executive Director of the United Way reported on the success of the School Clothes Initiative held in August of this year. Former campaign Chairpersons, Bruce Anschuetz & Jamie Anschuetz-Gohlke were thanked for their hard work during the 2015/2016 & 2016/2017 and attaining their set goal for both campaigns. They were presented with the first “Hall of Fame” trophy for their dedication and service to the United Way.

Steve Jakubcin with Cliff Anschuetz Chevrolet and Alison Jakubcin with Alpena Alcona Area Credit Union were introduced as this year’s Head Coaches/Campaign Chairpersons. “Steve and I are honored to be chosen as this year’s chairpersons, stated Alison. She continued, “We love Alpena. The United Way has presented us an opportunity to give back to a community we care about so much. We are both very excited to help United Way raise some much needed funds that go to help individuals and families all across northeast Michigan”. Steve added, “We have had great leadership from Bruce & Jamie and we are confident the Alcona, Alpena & Montmorency county communities will continue to be strong support of our United Way team and the agencies who serve those that need it the most. Many times the agencies provide basic needs such as food and shelter that many of us are fortunate not to worry about on a daily basis.” The chairpersons commented on the upcoming “Celebrate for a Purpose” fundraiser where all proceeds from the event will go directly to the United Way. Last year $15,054 was raised and they are looking to surpass that total this year. The event is scheduled for Wednesday, September 13th, 6-9 p.m. at the APlex. There will be a live and silent auction, heavy hors d’oeuvres from JJ’s, wine and beer tasting and entertainment by Randy Bouchard. Tickets are $20 and can be purchased at Alpena Alcona Area Credit Union Main Office, Cliff Anschuetz Chevrolet, United Way office and at the door.

A thermometer was presented to Steve & Alison indicating the amount that has been raised thus far by the top draft picks…better known as Pacesetter companies. $73,386 has been raised by Alpena Agency, Alpena News, Alpena Power Company, AMA Educational Service District, Cliff Anschuetz Chevrolet, First Federal of Northern Michigan and Lafarge. This amount represents 34.1% of the $215,000 goal.

“Alison and I need you to join with us and the United Way to make sure that the citizens in northeast Michigan have a place to turn when they are faced with hardship,” commented Steve. He continued, “United Way works hard to make sure there are vital programs and services for basic human needs, education and health for every person in our community. When we work together…together we win!”

This year’s campaign will assist with the programs and services of fifteen (15) health and human service agencies: Alpena Childcare & Development Center; Alpena D.A.R.E. Program; Alpena Public Schools, Alpena Senior Center, Alzheimer’s Association, American Red Cross, Boys & Girls Club, Child & Family Services of NE MI, Hope Shores Alliance, Hospice of Michigan, Partner’s in Prevention, Salvation Army, Sunrise Mission, The Chosen Ranch, Harrisville United Methodist Church Food Pantry along with United Way initiatives.
